Roller derby is a fast-paced, full-contact sport for Women (over 18) played on quad roller-skates. We are the first league in Hertfordshire and are currently recruiting.
At long last Roller Derby has come to Hertfordshire with the formation of the county’s first league, the Hertfordshire Roller Derby.
Launched in November, the league is going from strength to strength. We are currently recruiting new skaters to train with the Hells Belles Roller Girls and encourage all women over the age of 18 who want to take part in a fun, friendly sport to get in touch. All levels of ability and fitness are welcome regardless of shape, size or background. All we ask is that you are keen to learn.
What is Roller Derby?
Roller derby is the fastest growing sport for females right now, with 40+ teams in the UK. It is a fast-paced, full-contact sport for the over 18's played on the more 'traditional' quad roller-skates. Two teams of five skate together, anti-clockwise around an oval track. A point scorer from each team attempts to continually lap the pack, scoring a point for each opposing girl she passes. Skaters wear full protective kit including helmet, knee and elbow pads, wrist guards and a gum shield. Many adopt an alter ego and choose a skate name.
Originally played in the US in the 1920s, the sport has seen a huge revival in the past decade, arriving here in the UK in 2006. Interest in the sport has surged since the release of the derby-based film Whip It (2009) directed by Drew Barrymore. The growing success of Roller Derby in the UK prompted a feature on the BBC’s Inside Out London.
Roller derby is a predominantly female sport, although men's leagues are emerging and men can also get involved by becoming referees and officials.
The Hells Belles Roller Girls currently train in Hatfield. Full kit is available to hire, subject to availability.
